When Autistic Children Vocal Stim: Understanding theNervous System Behind the Sounds
Vocal stimming, such as humming, singing, or repeating sounds, is often misunderstood as disruptive behavior. For many autistic children, however, it serves as a vital form of nervous system regulation, helping them manage sensory input, reduce anxiety, and feel safe. Rather than asking how to stop the behavior, we should ask what the child’s nervous system is communicating. Understanding its purpose leads to more compassionate, supportive, and respectful care.
